Tiger Woods blows out 36 candles today — Friday, December 30th — so we’re sending him our best wishes and hope he has a wonderful day celebrating in top form.
Thirty-six. That’s actually quite young in golfer years, but Tiger’s an old 36. Well, depends on how you see it, but naturally, the hot topic of discussion is whether or not he has time to beat Jack Nicklaus’ major championship record.
At 32 Tiger won his 14th major at the 2008 U.S. Open (where he played virtually on one leg to beat Rocco Mediate in the legendary 18-hole playoff). Which put him three years ahead of the pace in his goal to eventually pass Nicklaus. Three-plus years later, Tiger is three years older, but has failed to make more headway toward the magic number.
Nicklaus was 36 when he won his 14th major. With Tiger’s winless period from 2008 to 2011, he’s now lost his lead and on the same pace as Jack, who went on his own drought and didn’t snag the 15th until he was 38.
Assuming Tiger stays healthy (which is never guaranteed, especially with his long history of injuries), he’s right on track to catch Nicklaus, who won three more majors in his 40s. When you think about it that way, Tiger has plenty of time to make up for his three-year dry spell.. He lost some valuable headway when injuries forced him to sit out four majors since the ’08 U.S. Open.
No reason to fret over the lost time, though. I’m going to throw it out there and say Tiger will win the Masters in 2012 — well, that is if he can hold off Rory McIlroy — putting him ahead of Jack’s pace once more.
Again, Happy Birthday, Tiger! Woot!

Even Rachel Uchitel thinks 36 yr old men are too old (even though she is 36 herself).
A couple of days ago she announced that she is five months pregnant with her 25 year old boy-toy husband.
It is hard for 36 year old balding geezers with bum knees to compete … in more ways than one
BTW, Woods won his 14th and last major when he was 32, not 33.
Time slips through the hourglass a little faster with each missed major opportunity.
Hmmm a 36 year old balding geezer with estimated net worth of over $800 million can pickup as many 25 year old girls as he wants.
@marky mark..you had to go uchitel. dude just hang out at tmz.com and let the grown ups talk golf.
and @Steph Wie has something good to say about Tiger it must be the trade winds in Hawaii.
Tiger Happy B-Day. For all the dumb talk. Best thing you did was unofficially dumping Hank Haney and firing Steve Williams. I’m still holding my Tiger stock..he’s like IBM. You never sell you IBM stock period!
Tiger’s career is more like RIM.
I wouldn’t buy that stock now, but there are some suckers who are.
36 is getting on and exceptions aside, you don’t improve after 35.
He needs to get back to his 68 average (even sub 70 would be acceptable).
71 is what he does these days. Too many rounds where the putts shave the hole (a telling sign).
He is like the man pushing the wheel barrow…. got the job in front of him.
The facts stated, I think the world really wants him back. Everyone loves a champion.
And his followers are like rabid Blackberry users – holding on to the bitter end!
It will be interesting to see if he can build on his late season rally, or if that was his post-scandal peak. Hard to say.
Birthday wishes for Tiger. Blackberry still number one in southeast Asia and the middle east. The ignorance on this blog is amazing. It feel like an anti Tiger Woods website.
C’mon folks! We are in the middle of the Hollywood movie here. You know the one, where the hero(in this case, Tiger) is reduced by his own faults (too many to name), finds redemption in a jedi master (Obi One Foley) and after a dramatic run on the beach with ‘your the best…..around’ blaring in the background musical montage (the last 9 months of hard work), he comes back to crush the russian (or northern irishman) in an epic final round comeback…tears all around, cut to credits (with a special thanks to all those who have contributed to his success) as he and his college girlfriend embrace on the verandah of the National. Ok, way too many 80′s movies for me, but it just feels like the script…..
Number one in Asia? Typically, that’s the last refuge of what used to be number one in North America.
Wishing the Tour’s most prolific pornstar chaser and wonderfully happy birthday! I am sure he will have blast this weekend.
Nev, The golf industry and millions of fans want Tiger to recover, but not everyone. There are plenty of us who wouldn’t mind if he never won another tournament. Speaking for myself, I’d be more willing to root for him if he’d kept his word about changing his on-course behavior.
@Power lip, you idiot. You know who you nincompoops owe your money to? The Asians.
Seems like you ‘Merkins are still holding on to the old dream like the English still believing they are on top of the world.
@Edinburgh
Often celebrities and athletes on the downside of their career find more success with respect to endorsements in Asia than back home. Asian markets pay more for old icons. In North America, stars who are on their ascent or at their pinnacle usually get the most lucrative endorsements.
What’s this got to do with people owing money to Asians?
You have completely misunderstood my post.
What Tiger wants, Tiger gets!!!
What Tiger does on his own time, is for Wei/Alan Alan/Wei to find out and post for us to read.
Cheers Y’all!
3foot1: Oh the old “on course behavior” bit, who really cares? Did you bring this up to try and impress the others in your third grade class?
