Try to contain your excitement, but GolfDigest.com has released “Five Revelations in The Big Miss,” Hank Haney’s oh-so-totally-juicy tell all about the six years he spent working with Tiger Woods. According to Haney, Tiger seriously considered giving up golf to become a Navy SEAL.
“Tiger was seriously considering becoming a Navy SEAL. I didn’t know how he’d go about it, but when he talked about it, it was clear he had a plan….I thought, Wow, here is Tiger Woods, greatest athlete on the planet, maybe the greatest athlete ever, right in the middle of his prime, basically ready to leave it all behind for a military life.”
Apparently Tiger’s intense, military-like workouts were potentially jeopardizing for his knee:
During four days of special-ops training in Fort Bragg, N.C., “Tiger did two tandem parachute jumps, engaged in hand-to-hand combat exercises, went on four-mile runs wearing combat boots, and did drills in a wind tunnel. Tiger loved it, but his physical therapist, Keith Kleven, went a little crazy worrying about the further damage Tiger might be doing to his left knee…One morning I was in the kitchen when he came back from a long run around Isleworth, and I noticed he was wearing Army boots. Tiger admitted that he’d worn the heavy shoes before on the same route. ‘I beat my best time,’ he said.”
Interesting enough, Tom Callahan’s book on Tiger, His Father’s Son, published in 2010, also quotes Haney saying that the 14-time major champ thought about going into service after his father Earl passed away. From a New York Times article dated November 30, 2010:
“When Earl died, I thought there was a strong possibility Tiger was going to give it all up to go in the service,” Haney said.
Tiger was asked to confirm and replied, “I didn’t,” but when he was pressed…
“Well, I’ve always wanted to become a SEAL. That’s something that I told my dad from the very get-go, either I’m going to become a professional golfer or I’m going to become a Navy SEAL.”
So, if I were to nitpick, I’d say this isn’t technically a “revelation.”
“Based on the excerpts published today, Hank Haney’s claim that his book is about golf is clearly false.”
“His armchair psychology about Tiger, on matters he admits they didn’t even discuss, is ridiculous. Because of his father, it’s no secret that Tiger has always had high respect for the military, so for Haney to twist that admiration into something negative is disrespectful.
“The disruptive timing of this book shows that Haney’s self-promotion is more important to him than any other person or tournament. What’s been written violates the trust between a coach and player and someone also once considered a friend.”
The Big Miss is set to be released March 27, a week before the Masters.

Heh. Should be a fun read when the book comes out.
I wonder whether he ever second-guesses himself for remaining in the game… no, even playing distracted and hurt, the money’s too good. Can you imagine some 28-yr old drill instructor screaming at Tiger Woods in basic training?
I hope he continues to get it together this year. The sport is more fun when he’s a prominent force.
Touring pro, turreting pro, it’s all good.
Is Haney hard up for money or something? Unfortunately I caught a few minutes of his latest show on Golf Channel featuring various “celebrities”. I was kind of embarrassed for him, to be honest.
This is gonna get ugly!
Any respect I had for Haney, is now pretty much completely gone… Disgusting.
Seen GolfCentral tonight?
I swear Rickie Fowler could stand in for Johnny Depp if needed!
And what’s Hank Keuhne doing in there?
Tiger’s dad was special forces, and as far back as 2004, he was clearly interested in special forces stuff. Around the time of his dad’s passing he got more interested in it, and did some due diligence in exploring the option. Ultimately, it’s a route he did not end up pursuing. I don’t see anything right or wrong with it either way.
There are people who prob have some idea how close Tiger actually got to making the jump, I’d guess Haney wasn’t one of them. That being said, since Tiger ended up not pursuing the SEAL’s route, he probably did deserve privacy, which has now been breached.
You have to have quite an ego to think you can just “join” the SEALs. Especially in your 30s with bad wheels. Celebrities don’t really understand the real world.
Tiger has or had the drive to be a Seal. However the skill sets needed to become one require more than just drive. I think he made the right choice to stay in golf.
I thought that Navy SEALs are required to follow commands. Sounds like a skill that is the complete opposite of what normally happens in the World of Tiger.
Tiger is a habitual liar…I’m sure he had to come up with a few stories to cover for himself during his time as a married man. Here’s how the conversation went.
Hank: Hey Tiger where were you yesterday, I waited for you at the range for 2 hours and you never showed up.
Tiger: Ahh yeah, sorry about that Hank, I was on a Top Secret training mission with Seal Team Six, aahhh yeah we were like jumping out of airplanes and ya know stuff like that. I’m sorry I can’t tell you more but I’d have to kill you then.
Hank: Oohhh, uummm, oooookkkk Seals huh?
Tiger: Yeah they offered to let me join them.
Hank: With absolutly no military training?
Tiger: Yeah
Here’s my theory….
It was Tiger who fired the kill-shot at OBL. This whole hydrant/divorce/knee thing is just a coverup for him to go through intense training in order to participate in the hunt for OBL.
You know, kind of like those rich folks going to Africa for big game hunting…
You know you’re a star when one of your former employees can make a lot of money writing a book about you. Pretty sleazy move by Haney, if you ask me. I guess his widdle feewings got hurt.
Tiger’s support for the military is so well documented. I mean every time he takes the Gulfstream to the Middle East to collect those 7 figure appearance fees, he always takes time to hop over to Iraq & Afghanistan to support the troops. Oh, wait. He doesn’t do that at all. But I’m just sure he really, really supports the military. He has been rumored to wear the Nike Camouflage shirt on his top secret missions behind enemy lines at the local Perkins Pancake shop.
