First- and second-round tee times and other tidbits for the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open
By Stephanie Wei under US Women's Open
Sebonack

Sebonack is pretty, but don’t let that fool you

Sebonack is raring to go for an incredibly scenic U.S. Women’s Open, but its beauty is deceiving. And the USGA sets up the golf course, so expect a grueling challenge, especially with these tricky greens — some of which are about as natural-looking as the surface of the moon — and strong winds.

The USGA is also quite deft at putting together great pairings for the first two rounds. 2012 USWO champ Na Yeon Choi will play with 2012 U.S. Amateur champ Lydia Ko, who is also only 16 years old, and Brittany Lincicome.

Other marquee pairings include Inbee Park, who has won five times this year, including the season’s first two majors, Stacy Lewis and Suzann Pettersen, the top-three ranked players in the world, followed by Vicky Hurst, Michelle Wie and Eun-Hee Ji, and then Ai Miyazato, Lexi Thompson, Karrie Webb — three fantastic groups in a row for your viewing pleasure.

Thursday’s featured threesome includes I.K. Kim, Yani Tseng and Paula Creamer.

Also, look out for hometown favorite Annie Park, who won the NCAA individual championship and led USC to the team title last month. I watched Park tee off with Lizette Salas and Kyung Kim this afternoon and Park, who was adorable, received the loudest cheers.

Of course, there’s also the Korda sisters — Jessica, 20, and Nelly, 14, who is the youngest competitor in the field. Meanwhile, Juli Inkster, the oldest at 53, is making her 34th USWO start, a championship record.

Oh, and this tidbit from the USGA notes just made me LOL: “Based on the course setup for the championship, the Course Rating™ is 80.9. The Slope Rating® is 152.”

Since I’ve been asked this a gazillion times, my favorite for the week? Pick an Asian, any Asian.

Quote of the (yester)day: “It’s a lot more firm and fast, like even since yesterday the golf course is getting a little brown in spots. The fairways are getting those round brown spots and the greens are getting a lot firmer. So with the heat and possibly the wind here, they just have to make sure it doesn’t get kind of ridiculous. Because they could lose control of this golf course fairly quickly with the heat and the wind and as firm as things are getting right now.” –Cristie Kerr
