Starting in 2013 the Fall Series events will become legitimate PGA Tour tournaments. The Tour policy board has voted to award full FedExCup points to the events following the season-ending Tour Championship. Now the change comes as part of the decision to modify the Tour’s schedule (along with the Q-school format). Instead of following a calendar-year format, the plan is to kick off the 2013-2014 season with the fall tournaments.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The PGA TOUR Policy Board on Monday granted a full allocation of FedExCup points to the PGA TOUR’s fall tournaments beginning with the newly reconfigured 2013-2014 schedule. As announced in March, the PGA TOUR season will begin in October 2013 with the current Fall Series and conclude in late September 2014 with the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.
“With the fall tournaments moving to the front end of the PGA TOUR schedule, the Policy Board believes the next logical step is for these tournaments to kick off the FedExCup and begin awarding full points,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “All of these tournaments have been very successful and certainly deserve to be part of the FedExCup competition.”
With respect to the system to determine the 50 PGA TOUR membership cards through the Nationwide Tour beginning next year, the Policy Board reviewed three options and decided to seek further input and feedback from the PGA TOUR and Nationwide Tour Player Advisory Councils before making a final decision. An announcement will be made at a later date.
As previously announced, the Nationwide Tour season will end with three tournaments that will include the top 75 players on the Nationwide Tour’s money list, the players ranked 126-200 on the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup points list, and non-members who would have earned enough FedExCup points from their performance on TOUR to place them 126-200 on the official FedExCup points list. The top 50 at the end of those tournaments will receive PGA TOUR membership for the following season.
Well, good news is at least one detail has been sorted out. I’m also glad the events are receiving full points instead of “partial” points, which reportedly had been proposed in previous meetings and mentioned by Commissioner Tim Finchem in press conferences.

Any idea what implications this — if any — has on the calendar-year opener “Tournament of Champions” at Kapalua, Maui?
Can it still maintain its “winner only invite” status, or will it be forced to become an open, regular field event?
My guess is that it will be the same way as before. It will still be winners-only based on the CALENDAR year and not the FedExCup year.
Apologies if this is a dumb question, I just wondered why they don’t simply move the FedEx cup to the end of the season, in December? Appreciate it rules out Northern States for the showcase weekend, but is that a major issue?
I believe the goal of establishing the series in the current time-frame was to (1) shorten the season (a goal of many of the top players) and (2) not have to go head to head with the NFL every weekend.
3) have more of the top players getting together for end of season events.
BTW the new fall series as the start of the year, totally kills their first two objectives (which you mentioned)
