Presidents Cup

Dynamic Duo Comes Unstuck

Playing alongside his ex-caddie was the least of Tiger Woods' worries in his opening round at the President's Cup.

Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods looked defenseless against the resilient International tandem of Adam Scott and K.J. Choi in the opening match of the President’s Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Course.

The beat-down was non-stop and the International Team needed just 12 holes to close the door on the Americans, 7&6. (continue reading…)

Asian Persuasion: Korea to Host Prez Cup in 2015

Eye on the prize

After the Presidents Cup opening ceremony on Wednesday, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem held a press conference with the three South Koreans on the Internationals team: K.J. Choi, K.T. Kim and Y.E. Yang sitting beside him. Finchem announced that South Korea will host the Presidents Cup in 2015 at an undetermined venue, marking the first time the event has been held in Asia and highlighting the golf boom in the region. Girl Problems for Ryo?

Tween troubles

Ryo Ishikawa arrived late for the Presidents Cup in Australia due to inclement weather and flight delays, giving him only one practice round to prepare for the biennial matches. International team captain Greg Norman didn’t anticipate Ryo having any problems by Thursday, saying “There’s absolutely no problem with Ryo himself.” But the 20-year-old Ishikawa might have distractions stemming from his personal life — the Japanese golfing superstar had planned to unveil his secret girlfriend to the world by bringing her to Melbourne, but it was nixed in light of rumors that she’s pregnant, according to Andrew Both’s report. Well, That Didn’t Take Long…

For some reason, I don't think that's going to be the scene on the first tee Thursday

As you may have heard, Greg Norman didn’t waste any time getting the most-talked-about-grudge-match of the decade out of the way. The International team captain claims pitting Steve Williams (Adam Scott) and Tiger Woods against each other in the opening session of the Presidents Cup wasn’t intentional, but then both captains said they wanted to get the touching reunion out of the way. Which is smart from a PR-y standpoint — they got in front of the story, quashing the built-up drama early, so it’d be over and done.

What a buzzkill! (continue reading…)

Tiger-Stricker Team Possibly Facing Separation Anxiety (*Update)

Potential trial separation?

Two years ago at the Presidents Cup, U.S. captain Fred Couples discovered an indomitable duo when he partnered Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in the team matches. The pair went on to win all four of their matches in 2009. Despite their outstanding record, there’s a possibility Couples will shake things up and put Tiger and Dustin Johnson together, according to the AP’s Doug Ferugson: (continue reading…)

Els: “Let’s Party Like It’s 1998!”

Knowing Ernie, I'm sure that was one hell of a party!

Ernie Els has come up with a new team slogan for the Internationals at this week’s Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, according to the event’s Facebook page: “Let’s party like it’s 1998!” — the meaning could be twofold (both of which might be smashing fun or worrisome, depending on how you see it). Is Stevie…I Mean, Adam v. Tiger Coming Soon to a Screen Near You?

Norman to Tiger: "I said, 'Tiger, you know that you need golf as much as golf needs you. Get back into it.'"

International captain Greg Norman believes it will be inevitable for Steve Williams Adam Scott and Tiger Woods to face each other at this week’s Presidents Cup, giving fans at Royal Melbourne and viewers across the world the marquee match they all want. (continue reading…)
