One year Amy Mickelson gave everyone Jimmy Choo pumps (retail average ~$600) because she loves Jimmy Choos.
There’s more to the role of the WAGs than supporting their significant others and teammates and giving inspirational speeches. Another part of the code: The gifts.
Throughout the week, the ladies (secretly) leave presents outside each other’s hotel rooms at Celtic Manor. In selecting the gift, the first-timers were told to pick something personal that they want to share with the others. Everyone bought 16 (11 players and five captains) of the same thing. It’s supposed to be part of the bonding experience and to help bring them closer.
Kandi Harris, Hunter Mahan’s fiancee, got photo albums encrusted with Swarwoski crystals (pictured above), which were made by her wedding planner, Misty Duncan. On the inside of the cover, they say, “Love, Kandi and Hunter.” (Harris and Mahan, who met on a blind date through Mahan’s sports psychologist last December, are to be married in Dallas in January.)
Amanda Caulder, Dustin Johnson’s girlfriend, worked in make-up for four to five years while she was in college, so she picked Chanel red lipstick and a compact of a quad of eye shadow, a blush and lip colors. “It’s really fun,” she laughs. “And we’ll get to wear red lipstick.”
Christina Zimmer, Jeff Overton’s girlfriend, chose purses.
Sybi Kuchar, Matt Kuchar’s wife, got custom-made alligator belts (which she was actually wearing when I spoke to her). Matt wears belts made by Bob Childs from the House of Fleming in Atlanta, so Sybi thought she’d get one for the ladies since they also lived in Atlanta up until last week.
No word yet on whether or not the ladies received Jimmy Choos again this year. I actually liked the photo album ideas because like Kandi mentioned, it’s tough to shop for women who, you know, already have practically everything. And I know it all seems rather excessive, but don’t mess with Ryder Cup tradition!

I have Wag exhaustion – they should all be left at home or left for the next 3 days in Offa’s Dyke.
In the UK the Ryder Cup is on pay tv not terrestial – so the audience numbers are going to be low despite the hype in Mr Murdoch’s newspapers….sad cos it means that there is far less interest.
The event has become an expensive corporate expense account bore. Sadly.
It was gbp80 (US$ 140) just to watch today’s practice.
This event needs to be given back to the people – terrestial tv and sensible pricing – and a golf event not a circus.
Bests.

This sex in the city thing is starting to bug. No wonder Tiger likes cheap whores. More sex, less city.
Spot on Robert. One despairs of the greedy b******s who have stolen the Ryder Cup and made it a vehicle for self-promotion and profiteering. 24 players, no wives, two captains (no vice-captains), one great course (ideally one that can withstand a few hours’ rain), 10-15,000 spectators paying no more than 35 quid or 50 dollars, the BBC, visiting players to arrive two days before the event starts, eat the food you’re given (no bringing your own chef), and a hundred other ways of making this about the golf and not all the other stuff that goes on.
Self-indulgent waste – let the WAG’s stay at home.
