Rickie Fowler began the final round of the Honda Classic with a four-shot lead. Hand him the trophy, right? Well, not necessarily. If it hadn’t been incredibly blustery at a difficult track like PGA National, with probably the most intimidating stretch of holes near the end with the Bear Trap — nos. 15-17, then, sure, it would’ve been a done deal.

But as one colleague noted, “I’ve seen this movie before,” meaning Fowler has experienced some scar tissue when he’s held the 54-hole lead and not managed to close the deal on the PGA Tour. The most recent occasion occurred at Riviera in 2016 when he led by a shot, but struggled in the final round and posted a three-over 74 to finish tied for seventh.

I will remember February 23rd as the day where WUP’s theme was “chill out, everyone” to all golf-related news. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been so preoccupied with the real news the past few months that my perspective is different than when my entire world was golf 24/7. Well, I loathe myself a little that I’m joining the masses in commenting on the latest Tiger-related circus because I’ve been over it for years, yet I have felt forced to partake in the mass media frenzy over everything Tiger Woods.

I’m not in denial that he moves the needle. I know he’s helped golf become more popular to the mainstream and non-golf fans are more likely to watch when he’s in contention or I guess these days if he’s simply playing any kind of competitive round. He has revolutionized the game. He inspired this new, current generation of young and exciting golfers who grew up worshipping him — the same group of guys I wish we could focus on talking about instead of hanging on to ghosts from the past. It’s doing everyone a disservice.

It was over before Jordan Spieth even hit his opening tee shot. Heck, it was over before he showed up to Pebble Beach to warm up for the final round. Spieth was not going to blow his six-shot lead through 54-holes. Not happening.

At 23 years old, he’s a grizzled veteran and as poised as they come — I should be used to his remarkable maturity and composure by now since I’ve had a front-row seat for the last four years. Can we just take a moment to remember what we were doing at 23? Our maturity level? I mean, I’m just going LOL.

Pardon the absence and the late take, but caught a bad virus a few days ago and I’ve been laid up — the only positive part of all this is that I have been unable to follow the ongoing national (and global) reality horror show since Wednesday. (So I might as well just blame my illness on our almighty leader President Trump.)

But I digress: Tiger Woods shot a five-over 77 in the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic. He made five bogeys and zero birdies at Emirates GC, and most disturbingly, he appeared to be in agony throughout this effort on Thursday.

We’ve been in the twilight zone for quite some time now — at the very least 11 days now, but I’d argue far longer. I know we’ve truly entered golf’s WTF era when I heard the news (first reported by ESPN.com’s Bob Harig) that Tiger Woods took a COMMERCIAL FLIGHT — not a PRIVATE JET — from LAX to Dubai! (However, he did take take a private plane from San Diego to LA.) It was the first time in probably 10 years, he told ESPN.

I didn’t want to say it before the first round finished. I didn’t want to get attacked and called a “Tiger hater,” even though that’s never a good reason not to write and/or publish anything — more accurate would be “feel like.” I wanted to give him a chance. Now, only ONE official round has been posted for Tiger Woods in 2017, so…wait for it, GIVE HIM A CHANCE. It’s early! It’s only been one round! Let the guy get his feet under him and some reps before we’re too quick to write him off.

For the love of God. I’m in my seventh year at this, and trust me, I’ve been there and I know how it feels to hope and want something (or someone) to go back to what it once was SO badly because that nostalgia and that AWESOMENESS that went along with it was SO FREAKING GREAT.

Big news on the Tiger Woods front this week: Well, first of all, he’s making his 42nd comeback to competitive golf at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where he’s won eight times — seven of these PGA Tour titles and one U.S. Open (on a broken leg!). This event is much more significant than that little tournament in the Bahamas with 17 people in the field, where Woods placed 15th, last month.

It will mark Woods’ return to the PGA Tour in 17 months after enduring several back surgeries and procedures in 2015. He says he feels different, though, and he’s also thrown in some new clubs into the bag — since his sponsor Nike Golf announced last year that it will no longer manufacture golf clubs.

After 18 hours of travel across the planet, I was pretty much giddy when the plane landed in Abu Dhabi. I had finally made it to the Middle East, a region of the world I had yet to visit, and as someone who enjoys exploring new places and cultures, I was beyond excited. Then, I turned on my phone and first thing I saw was an email announcing Rory McIlroy had withdrawn from this week’s tournament due to a rib injury — a stress fracture, to be exact. Which, to my understanding, is extremely frustrating because the only prescription at this point is straight-up rest for an average of 4-6 weeks.

Talk about a buzz kill. My reaction is summed up pretty well in the photo above. But hey, I wasn’t going to let that minor detail — like the main draw of the tournament, which boasts the best field on the European Tour all year, pulling out! After all, I’m in Abu Dhabi!

Here we go again. My mind practically exploded when this press release landed in my inbox this afternoon.  Obviously it had to do with Tiger Woods and another comeback announcement. Woods is apparently making his return to competitive golf in December at the Hero World Challenge (Bahamas, here we come!) after a 16-month hiatus due to a back injury and multiple surgeries.

And everyone’s reaction upon hearing this or reading the press release… and apparently I can’t insert emojis! (I was trying to put the eye-roll one).

Diehard golf fans probably know this already, but the European Tour is pretty chill and open to trying unconventional things. Well, at this week’s Turkish Airlines Open, one of the final events to the Race to Dubai (the European version of the FedExCup), the back tee of the 16th hole at Regnum Carya Golf and Spa Resort is located on the rooftop of a villa. Oh, and there’s a nice view of the swimming pool below, too.
