Gary Planos and I in 2011 at Kapalua

It is with a heavy heart that I report the golf industry has lost a true giant and friend with the death of Gary Planos. He was 62. He was a favorite among PGA Tour players for the years that he ran the Tournament of Champions. He basically helped build Kapalua into what it is today. He was found on Saturday in his home, where he’d live for over 25 years atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. No cause of death was given.

As longtime readers know, Gary was a very close friend of mine and I’m having trouble writing this post right now, but I wanted to pay my respects to him and note the lasting impact he had on many of our lives in the golfing world.

Me and Gary Planos hang out on the first tee in between starting times during the final round of the ToC

I’ve been trying to write this post for three days, but I kept getting too choked up when I started. It’s been an emotional week, mostly because it was probably tournament host Gary Planos’ last hurrah. For the last 12 years he served as tournament chairman, and for the past 20-or-so years, he’s become an icon and the face of Kapalua.

Just about anyone in Maui will tell you that Gary practically built golf in West Maui and the Kapalua brand. Gary Planos is Kapalua.

Hawaii One-O: Rocco Mediate aces No. 11 in a practice round at the Plantation Course

The pros are already arriving in Maui and some are even grinding it out at The Plantation course! The above action shot comes courtesy of friend of WUP and Kapalua’s unofficial mayor Gary Planos. This morning in a practice round for the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Rocco Mediate aced the par-3 No. 11 with a 7-iron.

Our awesome five-pack at Plantation (L to R): Hank (my stepdad), Ali Torre, Me, Joe Torre and Gary Planos

So, here’s something crazy: I played golf in Maui with Joe Torre on Thursday.

As will surprise nobody, especially Yankee or Dodger fans, he’s a great guy, as is his wife Ali. (And as is our host, Kapalua’s Gary Planos, who made this all possible.)

But I’m getting ahead of the story.

In fact, when I was heading to The Plantation Course, I had no idea I’d be golfing with one of the greatest managers in baseball history.

Joe Torre with autographed ball for Merf

After our round on Thursday, Joe Torre took a seat in Gary Planos office, getting ready to sign a few dozen balls. With Joe in the left seat and me in the right seat, I said, “Joe, one of my writers, Merf, is a huge Dodgers fan and it’d mean the world to him if you wouldn’t mind signing a ball for him.”

Me standing on the 18th tee at the Plantation Course

It’s now been well-established that I have a serious addiction to my silly blog. Isn’t the whole point of vacation not to work? (I’ve been getting a lot of flak from friends and readers — at least no one can ever criticize me for not working hard.) But honestly, I’m having a great time in Maui and I just wanted to share some of my greatest “vacation” ever with my loyal readers.

First of all, a big thank you to the best host in the world, Kapalua’s Gary Planos (otherwise known as “the Mayor”) — it’s well known in the industry that he’s also the best tournament director for the PGA Tour (Mercedes Benz Championship, most recently known as the SBS Championship). Just ask any member of the media or player — this past January, champion Geoff Ogilvy touted him as such and now I’m experiencing his unrivaled hospitality firsthand. And yes, I’m very lucky. Gary told me that this is going to be the finest vacation I have until my honeymoon. It sure it looking that way (though I wish I could detach myself from my darn laptop).
