Regardless of the result or nearly anything that happens this weekend in Mexico City — short of a bunch of golfers getting mugged and robbed, which isn’t likely, anyway, considering the security and most aren’t known to be the most adventurous in the world — the WGC-Mexico Championship is already a huge success. Golf claps for the PGA Tour, the Championship committee and our generous and gracious hosts! Let me tell you, no expense has been spared.

Tiger stayed on his yacht last week in Miami

Well, I can think of a million-plus reasons why Tiger Woods had a better weekend than just about anyone else, but here’s another: Olympic champion skier Lindsey Vonn, who has reportedly been dating the golfer for the past few months, spent the *entire* week with him on his yacht, Privacy, docked at a marina in the Miami area, according to the Daily Mail.

I never left, b**ches!

Congratulations to Tiger Woods, who captured his second win in 2013 and 76th career title on the PGA Tour. Oh, and we’re back with By the Numbers after a temporary hiatus due to the pesky real world intruding. On the way to his victory at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, Tiger obviously put up some impressive numbers, but we’re going to try look at several that you (probably) haven’t heard repeated ad nauseum (100 putts total), as well as a glance at a few other players.

Rory

Rors’ growing pains

Rory McIlroy felt the heavy expectations and pressures as the world’s No. 1 golfer weighing down on his 23-year-old shoulders and he had a meltdown, resulting in a bad decision in the heat of the moment. He likely thought the world was closing in on him and he just wanted to escape when he walked off the course last Friday at the Honda Classic.

As (I) expected, McIlroy was open and candid, admitting to his mistake and taking responsibility for his abrupt, un-Rory-like withdrawal in his press conference on Wednesday morning at Doral.

Woot!

It’s not even April and we’ve already seen our fair share of drama on Sundays in 2012. While the commotion caused by Tiger Woods’ unexpected withdrawal distracted the focus from the actual golf, the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship wasn’t lacking in excitement. In the end, Justin Rose, one of the real good guys out here, won his first World Golf Championship, not to mention his second marquee event in six months, making up a three-shot deficit to Bubba Watson at the start of the day.

Driving it 321 yards never felt so bad...

One minute Tiger Woods looked like he was in good spirits, smiling after he had just saved par out of the bunker on No. 11 at the Blue Monster, and the next, he was doubling over in pain after smoking a drive 321 yards down the left-side of 12 fairway and shaking playing partner Webb Simpson’s hand.

Uh-oh, not again.

It's all about the pink, baby.

Bubba Watson battled (if you can even call it that) the TPC Blue Monster and brought it to its knees in the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Watson, who teed off No. 10, fired off five birdies on his first nine for a five-under 31, and backed it up with another five-under 31 on the front side, including an eagle on the par-5 8th, to post a 10-under 62, matching his career low score on Tour.

Tiger and Casey having a laugh, maybe sharing injury stories!

I sat down with Paul Casey, who is making his first start this season, on Tuesday for a Q&A at the tail-end of his pre-tourney media tour for the WGC-Cadillac Championship on Wednesday morning. Casey battled with turf toe last year and then this past Christmas Eve, he was snowboarding in Colorado when he fell and dislocated his shoulder. (I posted his X-rays here.) Unfortunately or frustratingly, he wasn’t doing double back flips — he was taking a lesson and wearing a helmet, elbow pads, the full deal, and he was trying to catch his fall, so he stuck his right arm out and landed on it the wrong way.

Look out!

It was one of those bizarre days at Doral– we saw clouds, glimpses of sun, short bursts of torrential showers and swirling winds, with gusts up to 31mph (felt like it was constant!). The outcome? Pure carnage for most of the WGC-Cadillac Championship field, especially on the par-4 18th, where the scoring average was 4.743, higher than three of the par-5s (Nos. 1, 10 12).

Well, as you can see in the clip here, Dustin Johnson’s tee shot epitomized the first round’s wackiness, along with the perils. Johnson pushed his drive far right, incidentally directly at Golf Channel’s TV crane and the guy in the air operating the camera. Well, the guy managed to keep his cool and track the ball until it struck the crane and dropped below. Well done, sir.
