Billy Horschel did not qualify for this week’s World Golf Championship event in Mexico City — which is called the WGC-Mexico Championship. (Note: Sponsor threw crazy money at Tour and didn’t want even their name; simply “Mexico Championship” — no chance they’re throwing shade at the owner of the former venue, where this event was held for what feels like an eternity, right? Naw!)

However, Horschel, who went into last week ranked no. 75, might have cracked the top 50 in the world rankings had he finished second at the Honda Classic. And he almost did! — he was T3 going into the 72nd hole, but made a disappointing bogey.

Ouch, Horschel must have been crushed afterwards. I mean, who doesn’t love a no-cut event with a guaranteed (estimated) $80,000 payday! But none of that was enough to entice Billy. He told GolfChannel.com’s WIll Gray that he had already made the decision to pass on a trip to Mexico City, citing “security concerns.”

Reality show: When Trump staged scene on range to give Rory his 3-iron back after a scuba-diver fished it out of pond that Rory tossed it in during the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump Doral at Trump Doral

Rory McIlroy played 18 holes with Donald Trump last Sunday and received an absurd amount of backlash from the British press and everyone with a Twitter account and WiFi connection. I already defended Rory on this issue and told the critics to chill out because I, of all people, thought it was an overreaction. Rory came out to “clarify” the situation (even though the outrage and criticisms were seriously out of control). McIlroy, who has been nursing a rib injury, wanted to set the record straight, so on Friday, he posted a statement on Twitter (and I can’t confirm at the moment, but I’m fairly certain he actually wrote it himself–):

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t — this is obviously a constant “life lesson” theme and one that I’ve faced all too often in the golf media. (I guess it also comes with the territory when you happen to speak your mind.) It appears to also have been a theme for Rory McIlroy — and no, I’m in no way comparing myself to one of the best golfers in the world — that’s apples and oranges, so to speak.

McIlroy, who hails from Northern Ireland, played 18 holes with President Trump this past Sunday at Trump International. According to our friends at No Laying Up, Rory got the invitation via a phone call until Saturday night and hadn’t been planning to tee it up this weekend as he’s still nursing a rib injury:

We’ve been in the twilight zone for quite some time now — at the very least 11 days now, but I’d argue far longer. I know we’ve truly entered golf’s WTF era when I heard the news (first reported by ESPN.com’s Bob Harig) that Tiger Woods took a COMMERCIAL FLIGHT — not a PRIVATE JET — from LAX to Dubai! (However, he did take take a private plane from San Diego to LA.) It was the first time in probably 10 years, he told ESPN.

By Stephanie Wei under Jack Nicklaus

As you may have seen by now — I am fully aware that this came out on Sunday and I saw it then, but just forgot to post it — Jack Nicklaus sat down with Jim Axelrod of CBS News and talked about his business relationship with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. Nicklaus spoke highly for Trump and even said he’ll vote for him if he’s on the ballot this fall.

This came as no surprise. I’ve only known Nicklaus to speak well of Trump. In fact, I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard him deliver so many compliments about anyone else. (That’s probably not true, but what stood out to me during my 2013 interview with Nicklaus were his accolades for Trump, and by that token, the same can be said about Trump on himself).

Donald Trump

I have met many people who have had the pleasure of playing a round of golf with Donald Trump, and when you ask every single one of them about the experience, no one will fail to bring up his loose comprehension of the rules — or at the very least the generous “help” he receives from his caddies.

Many celebrities have come out publicly and called the GOP presidential frontrunner a cheater. The latest to share a story of witnessing Trump cheat on the course is boxer Oscar De La Hoya, who recalled a tale from two years ago when Trump joined up with his group at Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles. To De La Hoya’s horror, he watched Trump cheat not once, but twice in the span of only two holes, according to the Associated Press.

In a drama-filled final round at Doral, playing in super tough conditions, Adam Scott navigated his way to the top of the leaderboard for the second straight week, securing his second WGC title at the Cadillac Championship. It certainly wasn’t the easiest victory in the world, with Scott finding himself six shots off the pace with 13 holes to play after dumping balls in the water that led to double-bogeys on nos. 3 and 5. However, he showed last week in his win at the Honda Classic, that he could win with a quadruple-bogey on his card — though it was in the third round.

That’s just how good the 35-year-old Australian is playing. Oh, and don’t forget — as no one will let him — he’s doing it all while putting with the short putter since anchoring, the technique that he won the 2013 Masters with and rose to the no. 1 ranking for a period of time, was banned at the start of 2016. Looks like Scott is going to be just fine.

For as long as I’ve been in the golf industry, I’ve always heard rumblings of Donald Trump’s rampant cheating on the golf course. A common joke from those who have played with him is that his caddies have extraordinary talent when it comes to the “foot wedge,” but apparently the GOP presidential hopeful is a generous tipper, so it’s hard to find a looper to give him up.

The Washington Post takes a closer look at whether Trump is big fat cheater on the golf course and it appears to span beyond taking a mulligan or improving a lie slightly, according to several celebrity sources.
