Wow, last week’s intensity, especially Sunday afternoon, where I was clearly a glass box of emotions, was exhausting (in a super positive way) that it drove me and my immune system into the ground (not literally — also not the best analogy, but cut me some slack, still on the road to recovery). I apologize for the radio silence and not getting this post out Monday or even Tuesday, as I’d originally promised.
Many congrats again to Sergio Garcia and his family and team, along with Justin Rose, who showed pure class (as always and expected), and low-am Stewart Hagestad (whom apparently all my college buddies in finance know or through a friend in some shape or form, which isn’t surprising, since it’s a small world). More important, though, of course, congrats to the top-three finishers of the WUP Masters Pool, along with the three winners of the Friends of WUP Platinum Club — and yes, I just made that up.
Huge shout-out to all those who signed up, especially since I announced it less than 12 hours before the first tee time. I’ve had dozens of fantasy leagues and pools in the past, but not in recent years, and I don’t think ever on such short notice. From the pool stats, it appears 420 people signed up and 367 made picks before, again, the eleventh-hour deadline. Sure, that’s not the most people I’ve had participate in one of my pools/leagues, but considering I threw it at you at like 8 or 9pm ET the night before the first round, I was pleased with the grass-roots effort.
Again, massive thanks for those who participated and an extra big thank you to the many who donated via PayPal/Venmo. I truly appreciate the continued support and as promised, I have giveaways for the top three who were the most generous contributors, but I emphasize that whether it was $5 or $100+, every bit counts and I’m equally grateful.
So, one person outright contributed the most — thank you, Glenn Reeder — and then I think there were six others tied for second. I wasn’t sure how to break this tiebreaker, but someone on Periscope/Facebook Live suggested the giveaways should go to the individuals who made their donations first, which sounds the most logical and reasonable way to go about it. Which means the other two WUP Platinum Club winners are David Kotler and Jason Blackerby.
THANK YOU ALL! Contributions to “Friends of WUP” are always welcome, and if you continue to support WUP, the PayPal link is always open. Much appreciated and I can’t begin to express my gratitude. Any little bit helps keep WUP alive and running:
I’m still working out who gets what with regard to prizes, so either please email me (steph[dot]wei[at]gmail[dot]com or I’ll be reaching out to you in the next couple of days.
OK, now for the top-3 finishers in the WUP Masters Pool! First of all, EVERYBODY WHO PARTICIPATED IS A WINNER!!! However, since it’s a pool and a contest, the top-three finishers receive prizes!
Check out the final full standings here.
1. Joe Williams
(Lineup: Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Brandt Snedeker, Thomas Pieters, Kevin Chappell, Lee Westwood)
(Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Charl Schwartzel, Bill Haas, Adam Hadwin, Soren Kjeldsen)
3. Andyour Birdie cansing
(Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Thomas Pieters, Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood)
So, this is how we’re going to do the prize-giving. I’m listing all the commitments I have to date from various sponsors and manufacturers, and first place get to pick first, then second, and then third. We’ll work this out via email, so if you’re one of the above three, please reach out or I’ll hunt you down.
The options! — special shout-out and thank you to the below backers/supporters/sponsors, etc. This wouldn’t be possible without your help. I’ll refrain from naming names, but you know what you are!
*Mizuno JPX900 Driver (please send me specs, per website)
*Cobra F7 Fairway Wood (please send specs, per website)
*2016 PGA Championship pin flag autographed by champion Jimmy Walker (possible to negotiate another major/winner from recent years, depending on several factors … and NOT for resale on eBay or anywhere else. Feel free to donate to a local charity or cause, but I will find out if you try to sell this for profit.)
*Two dozen (possibly more) Srixon Z-STAR Series Balls
*Two dozen Titleist ProV1s
Hey, what do you know? That’s six prizes total! Boom. We’re covered. One more major manufacturer might also be in the mix, as well, but I, the moron, forgot to reach out until this afternoon, but they’ve been a longtime supporter and friend of WUP.
OK, Joe Williams, you get first pick!
Again, I’ll email you guys or you email me (with your mailing address, please) and we’ll work this out, but it all has to start with Joe!
Thanks again to all for your continued support of WUP.
We’re doing this again for The Players, but I need to be more organized, like securing a title sponsor, which I need to start thinking about, like, right now.
“RunYourPool.com” isn’t exactly the most economical of platforms, but it’s efficient and didn’t seem like any bugs occurred. If any Excel geniuses (I’m looking at you, Matt H.) would like to come up with an efficient and user-friendly system, you’re more than welcome to have a go at it!
Any and all feedback and constructive criticism is more than welcome.
Congrats to all!
