[Ed. note: To read about Royal Troon, the site of this week’s Open Championship, scroll down past where I open with Turnberry… Troon is the second course out of the five.]

Royal Troon

Royal Troon

In the southwest of Scotland–not far from Glasgow–is a historic country called Ayrshire, which is home to at least a handful of top-rate links courses.  I’ve traveled to Scotland at least half a dozen times, but somehow, my trips hadn’t taken me to this area for some particular reason. I found out quickly how rich in golf history Ayrshire is and all that it has to offer from five of the best links tracks in the world.

The region is home to two courses in the Open Championship rota, Turnberry (Alisa) and Royal Troon (Old), where next summer’s Open is taking place this July, along with the birthplace of the Open Championship, Prestwick Golf Club. We also played a newer course, Dundonald, which is the links course for the prestigious Loch Lomond Golf Club, and Western Gailes, an old school, classic links track that is a favorite, must-play on the western coast of the country.

Par-3 no. 8 at Royal Troon, aka the “Postage Stamp”

Apologies for seemingly abandoning this space and not posting for over a week — I swear I meant to write this *before* I left the U.S., but I had a deadline for an article on proper course setups for women (stay tuned!) and then I had a crazed travel schedule. I finally have a minute (but not very many) to breathe and write on this space. It’s certainly been an eventful week or so…

GMC Canyon

A few months ago, I was invited by GMC on a press trip entitled “Choose Your Own Adventure,” which was centered around featuring and showing off the automobile giant’s Canyon, a premium mid-size truck. I (obviously) don’t write about cars and I appreciated that the email invitation acknowledged that key fact, but the catch was the “adventure” part of the program involved golf, along with other intriguing outdoor activities.

Given the reality that I might not be able to say “yes” to escapades like this for an infinite amount of time, I enthusiastically accepted the generous offer. Besides, I’d never driven a truck before — I always found them a bit intimidating and out of my comfort zone. But, hey, YOLO!

I visited the Big Island of Hawaii from December 6-12 on a press trip, where I played five courses along the Kohala Coast. It was a phenomenal experience, highlighted by the awesome company, which included Ross Birch, the head of Big Island Visitor’s Bureau, Nathan Kam, the President of Anthology PR Group, Randy Sportak, sportswriter for the Calgary Sun, and Jason Deegan, senior writer for GolfChannel.com.

I already wrote about the culmination of our trip, playing in the Hawaii State Open Pro-Am with Parker McLachlin at Mauna Lani’s South Course. Here now, you can read about the rest of our trip…

Tiger vs. Rory, Part 2

Tiger vs. Rory, Part 2

As I’m in line boarding my flight to Shanghai, I realized I hadn’t put a note up here about my plans — while I have mentioned it on Twitter, but not everyone does social media — and I probably should share with you guys!

I’m heading to China for the next two and a half weeks…to exploit my Chinese-ness and Mandarin-speaking skills. JUST KIDDING.
