Rory McIlroy has never been shy when it comes to voicing his opinions. I, for one, am pleased to see that he has stayed true to himself and not allowed backlash and strong criticisms over the years for speaking his mind deter him from continuing to do so.

Muirfield, which last hosted the Open in 2013, earned a spot “back” on the rota of venues for the major championship on Tuesday after the all-mens club finally voted to allow women members for the first time in its nearly 300-year-old existence.

Reality show: When Trump staged scene on range to give Rory his 3-iron back after a scuba-diver fished it out of pond that Rory tossed it in during the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump Doral at Trump Doral

Rory McIlroy played 18 holes with Donald Trump last Sunday and received an absurd amount of backlash from the British press and everyone with a Twitter account and WiFi connection. I already defended Rory on this issue and told the critics to chill out because I, of all people, thought it was an overreaction. Rory came out to “clarify” the situation (even though the outrage and criticisms were seriously out of control). McIlroy, who has been nursing a rib injury, wanted to set the record straight, so on Friday, he posted a statement on Twitter (and I can’t confirm at the moment, but I’m fairly certain he actually wrote it himself–):

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t — this is obviously a constant “life lesson” theme and one that I’ve faced all too often in the golf media. (I guess it also comes with the territory when you happen to speak your mind.) It appears to also have been a theme for Rory McIlroy — and no, I’m in no way comparing myself to one of the best golfers in the world — that’s apples and oranges, so to speak.

McIlroy, who hails from Northern Ireland, played 18 holes with President Trump this past Sunday at Trump International. According to our friends at No Laying Up, Rory got the invitation via a phone call until Saturday night and hadn’t been planning to tee it up this weekend as he’s still nursing a rib injury:

I don’t care what anyone says, but Rory McIlroy is just the best. As members of the media, we’re “supposed” to be “non-partisan,” but please, if you are actually naive to believe that *every* single journalist does not have bias, then I’m sorry to be the one to break this to you: EVERYONE DOES. Sure, you can write a piece without any bias — a straight-up report or game story, but I’ll guarantee you that it was boring as hell and you may even dose off before finishing getting through the whole article.

So I will not deny that Rory is my favorite player to cover on Tour. He’s an all-around genuinely good individual and treats people with respect (even the media). He is a rarity amongst not only golfers but professional athletes. And if you’re going to hold that against me, then you’re reading the wrong website. (I can point you to many others that will write the same old boring cliched BS.)

When Jordan Spieth saw Rory McIlroy had made the change this week to his putting grip to left-hand low or “cross-handed,” Spieth said to McIlroy, “You’ve switched to the dark side, I see.”

McIlroy made it no secret earlier this week at the WGC-Cadillac Championship that he was switching putting grips after missing the cut at last week at the Honda Classic. (One of the beauties of Doral is that there’s no cut, so what do you have to lose?) Funny enough, McIlroy, who lit it up on Friday, firing a 7-under 65, was concerned before going with the big change that people would accuse him of “copying” Spieth, who putts cross-handed and is arguably the best putter in the world at the moment.

After missing the cut last week at the Honda Classic, Rory McIlroy needed a change — something, anything. McIlroy was tinkering around with his putting during practice over the weekend and decided that he was going to try putting the left-hand low with his grip into competition for the first time since the early days of turning pro in 2008.

He initially revealed to the world that this might be a possibility by posting a picture on Instagram with the cross-handed putting grip and confirmed that it was indeed the case during his press conference at the WGC-Cadillac Championship on Wednesday.

Put some good work in the last few days, ready for the blue monster this week!

For the first time in over a decade, exhibition golf is returning to primetime television, according to the Associated Press. (And we couldn’t be more excited!)

The report says that Quicken Loans is finalizing the details for a match between Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler that will take place at Detroit Golf Club on June 7, the Tuesday before U.S. Open week begins at Oakmont Country Club.

Golfers are athletes, right? Athletes train and exercise to maximize their performance level, right? Well, golf is pretty much the only sport where you can get slammed for working out too much.

In an NBC Sports conference call previewing the upcoming Florida swing, Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee voiced his concerns that McIlroy could follow Tiger Woods’ harmful path of injuries if he continues his “extensive weightlifting.”

Say it ain’t so — Rory McIlroy is engaged to girlfriend Erica Stoll, according to a report in the Irish Independent that cites a “source close to” the former world no. 1 golfer. The closest thing resembling corroborating evidence is a photo of the Eiffel Tower in Paris that McIlroy posted on his Instagram account.

At the same time, McIlroy’s camp has yet to deny the alleged engagement.

On Wednesday in his press conference ahead of the PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy has no intention of halting any type of normal activities he does off the course with his friends, including playing soccer. McIlroy, who tore a ligament in his left ankle during a friendly kickabout in early July, might take more precautions in the future, like perhaps wearing ankle braces, but he he’ll continue to live his life as he pleases, despite the potential risk for injuries. After all, accidents happen even when the most extreme safety measures are in place.
