The reason why Boo Weekley shaved his beard
By Stephanie Wei under PGA Tour

As you may recall, Boo Weekley has been sporting a beard this season, which he started growing out last November, but a few weeks ago, he shaved it off because he found that it was interfering with his number-one passion.

No, not golf. (And no, the Tour never threatened to fine him.)

Fishing, of course!

“I was down there fishing at my house or down at the beach fishing, throwing my catch net,” said Weekley, who shot a three-under 69 Friday morning at TPC Sawgrass. “And every time I threw it, the first time it snatched a bunch of my hairs out. I said, gosh darn, that kind of hurt.

“So I said, I’ll try it again and make sure I don’t put my chin down there on it. And I made it up and threw it again and it snatched a bunch more out. And I said, this is done with this. So I just walked back in from the pier, back in my condo, and I just took the clippers out and just shaved it all off.”

Here’s a photo we took of him at the Sony Classic in January.

Now, that’s not even the best part of Boo’s presser. Recently, he hired a trainer and started working out, and more surprising, he gave up alcohol this past month. WHAT! BOO NOT DRINKING BEER? That’s practically water to him. I have to triple-check with him how long it’s been since he’s had a beer and I won’t believe it until I hear it from him at least five times.

“It’s just been a change,” said Boo, referring to his new fitness regimen. “I mean, everybody goes through a change. Like this month I’ve taken off from — no alcohol, but working out. We work out maybe once or twice a week, and then just kind of don’t eat as much as I normally do. Just cut back a little bit on eating. And it’s showed so far; I’ve lost 20 pounds.”

Well, apparently it’s paying off as he’s in contention heading into the weekend at The Players Championship. Weekley is nine-under at the halfway mark, putting him in a tie for fourth at the moment (the afternoon wave is still on the course).
