The Bear Trap, the stretch of three consecutive holes nos. 15-17 at PGA National, can get the best of players. We saw what happened to 54-hole co-leader Adam Scott on Saturday afternoon. I’m sure there were quite a few victims of those holes on Sunday, but the twosome of Smylie Kaufman and Shane Lowry were likely the most errrr…entertaining of them all on the par-3 15th. Just watch:

Kaufman snapped his 7-iron over his knee following his tee shot in the hazard.

“Yeah, it was a learning experience,” said the rookie, who posted a two-over 72 to drop down the leaderboard. “I hit the proper shots in spots, it just kind of ate me up a little bit.”

That’s the Bear Trap for you. At least he chipped in on 16 for birdie afterwards. He also qualified for his first World Golf Championship at the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral next week by way of finishing top 10 in the FedExCup points through the Honda Classic.

“Yeah, I’m excited,” said Kaufman. “I’m playing well, I really am. I feel good about my game.”

Meanwhile, Lowry berated himself, “You f*cking idiot!,” after making (poor) contact on his tee shot on the par-3 15th. He didn’t realize he had been caught on the telecast and didn’t have much to say after that. The Irishman carded a five-over 75 in the final round.

Both players will likely be fined by the PGA Tour for conduct unbecoming of a professional, but we’ll never know because the powers-that-be don’t disclose that kind of information to the media and/or public. It’s TOP SECRET intel!
