Tour players accidentally hit fans sometimes with an errant shot. It happens. We just hope that no one gets seriously injured.
Well, on Friday at the suspended second round of the Abu Dhabi Championship, Jordan Spieth pulled his drive left on the 9th hole. He yelled “FORE” and pointed left, and a couple of fans in the vicinity ducked, but one guy couldn’t avoid the ball hitting him square in the rear end. However, the fan’s behind acted like a barrier and prevented Spieth’s drive from going into the water hazard, where it was definitely headed before divine intervention came into play.
It appeared like the guy was OK, as he and his mates were having quite the laugh over the incident. He probably needed to sit on some ice afterwards, though!
The commentary on Golf Channel was hilarious. My favorite line was perhaps Ken Brown quipping, “Dear, dear, that was nearly a plugged lie.”
After a lengthy fog delay suspended play in Abu Dhabi, Spieth, along with his playing partners Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, only completed 13 holes. Spieth was one-over for the second round at the time, putting him seven shots behind current leader Andy Sullivan.
