David Feherty, one of the most popular figures in golf broadcasting, will not return to CBS as a golf commentator next season. That’s right — unfortunately, Feherty, who has been with the network for 19 years, called his last tournament (at least on CBS) last week at The Barclays.
CBS Sports decided not to renew Feherty’s contract after talks broke down, according to Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand.
Sources told SBJ that the two sides failed to reach an agreement on Feherty’s role on the network’s golf coverage.
That’s a huge loss for CBS. Feherty brings smart, candid and witty commentary and adds much-needed personality and color to the otherwise sometimes bland coverage. (I mean, it’s golf.)
Good news for Feherty fans is that there are other networks that cover tournament golf which could hire him as an on-course commentator. Naturally, NBC seems like it’d be the frontrunner in adding Feherty to the line-up. He already has a relationship with NBC Sports Group and hosts an eponymous interview show on NBC-owned Golf Channel.
