Bubba Watson is infamous for throwing temper tantrums, blaming others for his woes and just straight-up complaining, especially at major championships — last year was an exquisitely good one for them. Well, he continued the pattern in the opening round of the U.S. Open.
The pace of play at Chambers Bay isn’t exactly ideal, but that’s what you have to expect for the toughest test in golf, particularly at this course, and Watson wasn’t pleased with it. He had to wait to hit his second shot on the par-5 18th and after he pushed it left, he yelled, “Wait 30 minutes! This is pathetic professional golf!”
Others in his group, Phil Mickelson and Angel Cabrera, also had to wait the same amount of time, but we didn’t hear them whine.
After Watson posted an even-par 70, which was by no means poor, particularly considering he had two double-bogeys, he declined media requests. However, reporters managed to track him down briefly.
“We’ve been waiting all day,” said Watson when asked about his reaction on 18. “I just hit a bad shot. I’m not going to pout. We’ve all seen articles written about me that I’m a pouter. It’s nothing new.”
OK, Bubba. #PrayforTedScott
