Rory McIlroy certainly didn’t like the shot he hit just before his epic club throw on the par-5 8th during the second round of the Cadillac Championship. McIlroy dumped his approach shot into the water guarding the left side of the hole, and his 3-iron promptly followed it into the drink — I’d say he got at least a good 30 yards on it.
Check out that technique! That turn! That extension! That torque! That release!
Ladies and gentlemen, if you’re going to throw a club, you should study Rory’s form in the above GIF — because that’s the way it should be done. I mean, Henrik Stenson, who is no stranger to launching and/or breaking clubs, would definitely approve of that chuck.
Following the club toss, McIlroy reloaded and his second attempt to reach the green was successful. He went on to two-putt for a bogey.
Hopefully, McIlroy doesn’t need the 3-iron for the remainder of his round. (I mean, I’m pretty sure you can get away without a 3-iron.) He can’t replace the club during play, but I’m sure Nike can overnight a new one to him.
Don’t worry, we’ll ask Rory about the incident after he’s signed his card at Trump National Doral. He’s currently even-par for the day through nine holes and one-over for the tournament.
