Ryder Cup competition already comes to a head

As you can see in the above photo that he posted on his Instagram on Sunday, Rickie Fowler decided to show his team spirit and passion for the Ryder Cup via a new haircut. Prior to boarding the charter plane to Scotland, the American had “USA” shaved into the side of his head.

Captain Tom Watson was quite supportive of Fowler’s new hairdo.

“I thought it was great, terrific. It brings a light spirit to the team and I would not be surprised if (PGA of America president) Ted Bishop puts USA in his hair if it means we are going to win.”

European captain Paul McGinley agreed with Watson’s assessment.

“As Tom said there with the haircut of Rickie, that’s great,” said McGinley. “I think the guy who is so passionate about his country that he will go and do that for the Ryder Cup, I think that’s brilliant.”

Your thoughts? Yay or nay? Either way, I expect Fowler to back up his enthusiasm/team spirit with some solid play in the biennial matches between the U.S. and Europe at Gleneagles.

Update: Kudos to PGA of America prez Ted Bishop, who did indeed get the Fowler-USA cut! — though you may have to kind of squint to see the letters…
