Rickie Fowler is fast approaching elite status in the game of golf. He joined Tiger and Jack as the only players in the modern era to finish in the top-5 of all four majors in a season, and now, it’s time for Rickie to get his name on the FedEx Cup.
People in the golf world are divided on the status of the FedEx Cup. However, if you win the Cup, then you are considered the best golfer out of a four-tournament series which includes the best golfers in the world. That fact gives the playoffs major status in my book.
Fowler can quickly forget the bitter defeat at Valhalla by making a playoff run. He said, “I’m looking forward to getting off to a good start [at the Barclays], and seeing if I can keep moving up on the FedExCup points list and have some fun at East Lake golf course.”
Rickie is currently 16th in the FedEx Cup Standings, and he will be gunning for the top-5 by the time he arrives at East Lake, the fourth and final event. The players inside the top-5 have an opportunity to automatically win the Cup by winning the Tour Championship.
If Rickie wins the FedEx Cup, then he will have finally gotten the best of his peer, Rory McIlroy. Fowler said, “I think I said it after the British Open, [Rory] and I playing in the final group, it wasn’t going to be the last time him and I were in the final group together or battling for a major down the stretch.”
I believe the playoffs are a major, and it’s time for Rickie to earn a big time victory.
