Phil Mickelson is playing his best golf of the year at the right time. He fired a 67 in the third round of the PGA Championship to remain three strokes behind Rory McIlroy.
Lefty said, “I feel like every time I tee up this week I have that 7, 8, 9 under par round in me. I just haven’t played all 18 holes the way I played the last five. I need to do that tomorrow right from the start. I’ve got to be sharp and I feel like I have got that low round in me. The golf course is giving it to us, if you play well, and I just need to do it all 18 holes.”
Mickelson birdied two holes on the front nine, but went backwards with bogeys on 11 and 12. He then put a charge into the crowd with three straight birdies on 14, 15, and 16, and nearly eagled the 18th, but settled for a birdie and a round of 67.
If Phil makes a similar run at the lead on Sunday, then the crowd will be going nuts. “It is just great energy. It’s great energy to have so many people and be so supportive not just of myself but all the players. They have been great.”
