Rory rides momentum into season’s final major
By Bernie D'Amato under PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy is on fire, and he did not slow down at the first round of the PGA Championship. McIlroy shot a five-under 66, and is currently one shot off the lead at T4.

The opening round was not McIlroy’s cleanest of the year. He made the turn at three-under, but quickly fell to even par after a double-bogey on the par-5 10th and a three-putt bogey on the par-3 11th. Rory then went into hyper-drive with four consecutive birdies on holes 12 through 15, and also narrowly missed his eagle attempt on 18 before tapping in for a 66.

McIlroy said the understatement of the year after his round. “I’ve got a good thing going right now. I’m trying to ride that momentum as much as I can.”

He is playing phenomenal golf, and we are all fortunate to watch greatness in the making.
