Phil Mickelson has been battling a strep throat all week, but he overcame his discomfort in a big way on Sunday. Mickelson birdied 10 holes at Firestone for a 62, and is currently in a tie for 12th place.
The 62 is the lowest score of the year for Mickelson. He began the round with three straight birdies, and then bogeyed the fourth hole before a birdie on five. A birdie on seven was followed by a bogey on eight, and he turned at three-under 32.
A birdie on 10 foreshadowed a tremendous back nine. After parring 11 and 12, Lefty holed out for a birdie on the par-4 13th. He added three consecutive birds on 15, 16, and 17.
In classic Phil fashion, he hit his tee shot on 18 behind a tree root. After debating what club to use, Phil chopped at the ball with a hybrid. Miraculously, the ball landed 15 yards short of the green in the perfect spot for a chip shot to the back hole location. After hitting the chip to four feet, Mickelson sank the putt for a 62.
Before starting his final round, Rory McIlroy said he would like to shoot a 63 to put pressure on Sergio, and Phil showed the round is out there.
