Rory McIlroy is tied for fifth place at the BMW PGA Championship after posting rounds of 68-71 to get to five-under total. He opened the second round with a three-over 38, but battled back with a four-under 33 on the closing nine to jump into contention at Wentworth.
On Wednesday, Rory spoke to the press about calling off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. He said in a statement that he wasn’t ready for marriage, and then answered questions from the media later in the day. To Rory’s credit, he faced the reporters like a true professional despite the deeply personal subject he is dealing with.
The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland said it would be difficult to focus, and his round on Thursday was erratic, but in a good way. Rory had two eagles, three birdies, and three bogies for a four-under 68. Today, he came out on the right side of another up-and-down round with an eagle (second in a row on the par-5 twelfth), four birdies, three bogies, and a double for a one-under 71.
Rory is tied with Henrik Stenson, Jonas Blixt, and Fabrizio Zanotti at five-under. The leaders, Thomas Bjorn and Shane Lowry, have given themselves some breathing room at 10-under, but it is moving day tomorrow, and plenty of star players are right behind them. Two-time BMW PGA Champion Luke Donald and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are tied for third at six-under.
