Splitsville for Wozzilroy

Apparently, Rory McIlroy decided to heed Gary Player’s advice! Kidding.

McIlroy has broken up with his long-term girlfriend, tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, according to a report in the Irish Independent

The world-class tennis player is said to be “absolutely devastated” by the Irish golfer’s decision, having recently made her intentions clear that she wanted to give the relationship another go.

After the story originally appeared in the Sunday Independent, McIlroy denied the split in an attempt to placate his girlfriend and get the relationship back on track.

But although he tried his best, friends say, the golfer has finally mind his made up.

“Yes they are over. It’s a difficult time for them both but it is for the best in the long run,” a source told the Sunday Independent.

McIlroy is traveling internationally. He’s currently in Japan and he leaves later in the day for South Korea, where he’s playing in the Korea Open. We contacted Rory’s new management company. Asked if the report was true, his manager Sean O’Flaherty said via text message that he wasn’t going to comment on McIlroy’s private life.

So, take that for what it’s worth.

McIlroy and Wozniacki were rumored to be having problems in August during The Barclays and a report even surfaced that the power couple had split, but Rory ended up denying it and said they were “all good.”

This time it sounds like things might be a little more permanent, but we’ll see — or, rather, hope to hear confirmation or denial of some sort from Rory.

Earlier in the week Rory played golf with President Bill Clinton at Portmarnock in Dublin. He also spent time with Clinton and Bono at a charity dinner the evening before, while Caroline split her time between Monaco and Copenhagen.

McIlroy, who struggled in the 2013 season, didn’t qualify for the Tour Championship. His best finish since placing runner-up in Texas the week before the Masters was T8 at the PGA Championship in August. He missed the cut at the Open Championship.

After McIlroy competes in Korea this upcoming week, he’ll spend two weeks playing in China.
