OH MY GOD. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR.
I wish this was an SNL skit or Onion parody, but unfortunately this actually happened: European Tour Commissioner George O’Grady was trying to defend the now notorious remark Sergio Garcia made on Tuesday at an awards dinner — that he’d serve Tiger Woods “fried chicken — when he uttered his own racially insensitive phrase.
“We accept all races on the European Tour, we take it very strongly; most of Sergio’s friends happen to be very, er, are coloured athletes in the United States,” said O’Grady, who has received grief for not slapping Garcia with a suspension and/or fine.
<hands in face, shaking head>
O’Grady’s comment might be worse, or at the very least, more idiotic than Sergio’s because it was made after all the backlash and you’d think he’d be, you know, a little more sensitive or careful with his choice of words. I’m not even “outraged”– it’s just so, so stupid. We’ve all said things we wish we could take back, but really? I mean, REALLY? Wow.
O’Grady added: “There is no need for any further disciplinary action because it’s gone so deep with him and all our players think the same way.
“We are aware with his arguments or his discussions with Tiger Woods which really quite frankly has no real place either, he accepts that.
“Tiger himself has made remarks and said it’s time to get on and continue playing golf and we want to get on with our flagship event which is set up so well this week.”
O’Grady has since apologized for using the term “colored,” saying, “I deeply regret using an inappropriate word in a live interview for Sky Sports for which I unreservedly apologise.”
Now I don’t think O’Grady is racist or meant that maliciously. It’s simply ignorance and stupidity, which might be worse than being racist. But, CRIPES! No wonder so many people hate golf and the game gets a bad rap.
