Before moving on to all things PGA Championship, Ben Kohles deserves a mention for his record-breaking feat. After turning pro a few weeks ago, he won in his debut on the Web.com Tour. Just a week later at the Cox Classic yesterday, he shot a final-round 62 to win by three over South Africa’s Dawie van der Walt.
Kohles is the first player to win in his first two starts on the Web.com Tour (or whatever the title sponsor was of the PGA Tour’s developmental tour). In other words, he’s undefeated in his fledgling pro career. Pretty impressive, huh?
“I think I played the best round of my life today. That was a blast,” said Kohles, who hit 17 of 18 greens. “I’m pretty shocked myself. What are you supposed to do better than this?”
The 22-year-old University of Virginia alum has earned $261,000 in his two starts to vault him to second on the Web.com Tour money list. He’s locked up his PGA Tour card for 2013. The top-25 money finishers “graduate” to the bigs at the end of the year, culminating with the Web.com Tour Championship.
Here are the standings as of yesterday:
We’ll be keeping tabs on Kohles for the rest of the season and looking forward to following his progress as a rookie on the PGA Tour next season.
