Donald finished the RBC Heritage in a tie for 37th place.

The leading light of the PGA Tour’s English contingent, Luke Donald, has ended his month-long stint at the summit of the world rankings.

The 34-year-old, whose form has fluctuated unpredictably in recent months, ceded his place to US Open champion Rory McIlroy in carding a final-round 71 at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina.

Enough for a final placing of 37th and an aggregate total of two-over-par, the round fell some way short of the standard required to secure of top-eight finish, the least impressive result with which the Englishman could hope to extend his reign.

McIlroy, who spent the week in Copenhagen with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, was struck by the obvious irony of this latest statistical permutation:
