Teen phenom Lexi Thompson was in attendance at last week’s Honda Classic, where she announced her decision to employ a full-time caddy – they grow up so fast – and met hero Tiger Woods for the first time.
Thompson has played under the close supervision of her father, Scott, since turning professional in 2010, but the challenges facing her brother Nicholas, who plays the Nationwide Tour this season in the hope of regaining his PGA Tour playing privileges, have prompted some behind-the-scenes changes.
Scott will caddy for Nicholas on the Nationwide Tour, while Lexi will join forces with Greg Johnston, an LPGA Tour veteran who has caddied for a handful of major-winning stars, Julie Inkster, Suzann Pettersen, Brittany Lincicome and Lorena Ochoa amongst them.
After playing the Honda Classic pro-am in the company of Greg Norman, Thompson assumed the role of spectator for the remainder of the week. On Saturday, she even got to rub shoulders with Tiger Woods.
The Golf Channel’s Randall Mell takes up the story:
“Lexi had some fun Saturday when Woods walked past her during his round. She was waving a ‘Tiger Towel.’ She said Woods looked at her, then did a double take, then a triple take to confirm his sighting. When he was sure it was her, he gave her a wave and smile.
‘It was funny,’ Lexi said.
Before Saturday, they had never met.”
Teenagers: they’re so inarticulate.
