While I was caught off guard in April when news broke that Dustin Johnson and Bobby Brown had parted ways, I wasn’t shocked to hear DJ has rehired his former longtime caddie, Brown, after splitting seven months ago (hey, every relationship needs breathing space at some point).
In the original report back in April, Dustin described the split as a “break” and that’s exactly what it’s turned out to be.
After holding caddie auditions for a few weeks, DJ hired Fred Couples’ caddie of 20-plus years, Joe LaCava, arguably the best in the game. They worked together beginning officially at The Players in May. Five months later, LaCava dumped DJ in October to work for Tiger Woods.
Good move by Dustin to bring Brown back on the bag. They were a good team despite the now-infamous unfortunate incidents, beginning with DJ’s 82 in the final round at Pebble Beach after holding a comfortable 54-hole lead, bunker-not-a-bunker at the ’10 PGA Championship, and then the near disqualification at Riviera when Brown mixed up their starting time (which DJ should be responsible for), resulting in a two-stroke penalty.
Anyone else notice that Dustin enjoys some strange, but ultimately returns to the familiar? Just saying.
