Ernie Els has come up with a new team slogan for the Internationals at this week’s Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, according to the event’s Facebook page: “Let’s party like it’s 1998!” — the meaning could be twofold (both of which might be smashing fun or worrisome, depending on how you see it). The third-ever Presidents Cup was also held at Royal Melbourne in December 1998, where the Internationals whupped some major American butt, winning by a margin of 20 1/2 – 11 1/2. It was the first and only time the International team has triumphed in the competition, but the dominating victory thirteen years ago makes them the favorites to prevail again this week.
Fred Couples, the U.S. captain, played for the losing side, along with Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods — who are all looking to avenge the crushing defeat.
Greg Norman, captain of the Internationals, was a member of the ’98 squad, along with Els, who isn’t afraid to throw a few or twelve back.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the new team tagline is alluding to what I’m sure was one wild and very, very drunken celebration — before, during, and after the matches.
