Soak it in, folks.
From across the pond in NBC’s patio equipped with a TV (see here for photo of view), I was fortunate to have quite possibly the best vantage point of Bill Haas’ clutch shot in the half-water, half-bunker hazard guarding the 17th green. Bubba Watson and Aaron Baddeley had also gathered there and Bubba turned into a full-on commentator, which was actually pretty entertaining.
“Haas is in the middle of the (fairway) bunker so he has a shot,” said Bubba, referring to the outcome of Haas’ drive on No. 17, the second playoff hole. “The lie looks like it’s nestled down a little bit.”
He was in the same bunker in regulation with that tough stance on the downslope, I replied.
“I thought he shanked it,” said Watson, who finished T23 in the Tour Championship.
When we all saw Haas’ approach hit the left side of the green and start rolling down the hill, there was a mix of groans and cheers.
“TAKE HIS SHOES OFF,” exclaimed Bubba. “HE CAN PLAY THAT ONE!”
And indeed he did — and almost holed out. What a shot.
