The draw has been made for the 93rd USPGA Championship. Yes, that is the one happening next week at Atlanta Athletic Club. There are apparently 14 PGA champions and 30 major champions in this year’s field– thank you, press release– making this year’s one of the strongest USPGA fields in recent memory.
I haven’t had time to spend a great deal of time with the list yet, but these are the pairings that immediately grabbed my attention:
Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington, David Love III (8:45)
Two golfing enigmas— the man who’s addicted to tinkering with his game and the man who was addicted to tinkering with… well, you know– will tee it up in the company of the current US Ryder Cup captain on Thursday morning. I’m not sure if Tiger ever got around to seeing Paddy’s appearance on the Late Late Show, but this one should be fun.
Martin Kaymer, Y.E. Yang, Shaun Micheel (13:15)
The last three players to make their major championship breakthrough at the PGA, two members of this group will no doubt suspect Shaun Micheel’s presence of carrying a coded message about their status in the world of golf.
Matteo Manassero, Ryo Ishikawa, Adam Scott (07:55)
Two promising youngsters will share the company of a resurgent Adam Scott for the first two days. A guy who swings it like their idol used to, with his old caddy on the bag: it’ll nearly be like playing with the real Tiger Woods. If Scott could only grow a strange goatee in time for next Thursday, the experience would be complete.
One final thing: I notice Kevin Na has been put out last, in the company of Todd Camplin (?) and the winner of this week’s Reno-Tahoe Open. I see what they did there.
