Asked about Rory McIlroy’s performance yesterday, Lee Westwood noted, with more than a hint of contempt, that “They’re probably debating whether he’s already won it on TV.”
No, he may not have won it, or even left himself with the nearly insurmountable lead he looked well on his way to consolidating for most of the second round, but McIlroy’s performance so far has been one of genuinely historic magnitude. He’s already reached the lowest under-par score in US Open history (-13) and enters the weekend having tied the record for the tournament’s largest 36-hole lead (6 shots).
Will Saturday’s round bring with it more in the way of record-breaking, or will Congressional ’11 devolve into an altogether cagier and more attritional proposition? Comments and updates below, folks.
