On Monday morning the USGA announced that Gary Woodland and Brand Adamonis were added to the field at the US Open at Congressional. After placing sixth at the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago, Woodland moved within the top-50 in the world rankings.
Thanks to the new exemption category in 2011 — aka “The Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler got screwed last year rule” — the USGA reserves extra spots in case players climb in the top 50 as of June 13.In the new rankings released today, Woodland is ranked No. 40.
Since that applied to no other player, the USGA took someone off the alternate list. The winner of the mathematical calculation that determines the lucky player? Brad Adamonis.
He shot 66-71—135 in sectional qualifying on June 6 at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.
In Thursday’s first round, Woodland will tee off at 8:39 a.m. on the first hole with Jeff Overton and Ryan Palmer and Adamonis will start on the first hole at 7:11 a.m. with Greg Chalmers and Kirk Triplett.
The 156-man field is complete unless someone withdraws before the start of play on Thursday.
