During Ryan Palmer’s second round at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, his caddie James Edmondson discovered it was the birthday for Patrick, the standard bearer in their group. Asked how he was celebrating, Patrick said he planned to celebrate turning 15 with dinner at the Macaroni Grill, which planted the seed for James’ and Ryan’s Friday evening plans.
“We were sitting at the bar eating and watching basketball and we saw Patrick walk in with his friends and family,” said Ryan. “He didn’t know we were there. I told the bartender that I’d like to send Patrick a birthday cake and to tell him it’s from Ryan Palmer and James.”
As the night went on (or as the booze continued to flow), Ryan decided to pick up the entire tab for Patrick and called the waiter over to give him enough cash to cover the bill and tip.
“I’m very fortunate with the things I get to do — I get to play golf and the money I get to make, so I thought, what a great opportunity to buy a young guy, who was a good kid, dinner,” said Ryan.
When Patrick and his family discovered what Ryan had done, they came over to the bar, where he and James were still watching the basketball game, and took pictures together.
“I’ve never done that before,” said Ryan. “I’ve never just randomly bought dinner for somebody. It was my birthday present to him.”
And I bet it made Patrick’s day.
