Rickie Fowler made a hot pink statement on Thursday, beating Phil Mickelson 6&5 in the second round of the Match Play Championship. Dressed in a bright pink shirt and matching shoes and hat, Rickie received some good-natured grief from Phil before the round, who said, “My daughter Sophia has a pair that color. She wears them to her dance class,” according to Doug Ferguson of the AP. If you post five birdies and two eagles in 13 holes, I’m pretty sure you can wear whatever you want (and I’m not sure Phil is qualified to dole out fashion tips, anyway).
“I played great,” said Rickie. “After making bogey on 3, I turned things around with two birdies. And Phil left a couple of doors open that I took advantage of. My momentum kind of went my way from there.
“I had a lot of fun playing against Phil. Obviously I look up to him. He’s someone I love playing with and against and look forward to doing that for a long time.”
Phil was gracious in defeat. “Certainly I got outplayed, that’s obvious,” he said. “(Rickie) played some good golf. He’s a talented player. I really like the guy and again, I pull for him, he’s a fun guy to pull for.”
Rickie in the mix is also a bonus for American golf, which has fared better than some expected at the Match Play.
Added Phil: “He’s a nice guy, really is a quality individual, means a lot to American golf.”
Fowler will face Matt Kuchar, another Ryder Cup teammate, in the round of 16 on Friday. My pick? I have Fowler winning in my bracket, so I’m sticking with that.
