Tiger! Tiger!

For die-hard fans, round one of the Match Play Championship is one of the most riveting days of the year in golf, with the exception of the majors. There’s still a few hours left to make your Match Play bracket picks. I just did! — here’s a link to the printable bracket and/or you can fill out an online version that Golfweek built. I did both. It was very nerve-wracking to fill the paper version one out in pen. Thanks to Golfweek for making the electronic game user-friendly.

Here are screen shots of my bracket (hint: It’s European-biased…at least for the final four).

Ian Poulter tosses a marker

I’ve drawn up one conclusion after looking over this year’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship bracket: Picking this year’s winner seems about as rare as rocking horse crap. The 64-player bracket mimics the NCAA Tournament, but is MUCH more difficult to predict. While seeds play a vital role in March, they are completely meaningless in this case.

Hunter Mahan and Sean O'Hair work on their swings next to each other at the driving range at Riviera

Last Thursday afternoon at Riviera Country Club, Sean O’Hair, who was getting a lesson with instructor Sean Foley, bombed a drive, turned around to Hunter Mahan, also a student of Foley’s, and jokingly said, “Next week — suck on that, b—-!”

Mahan and O’Hair, who have been good friends since they were 13, face each other in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. At the time they weren’t aware the bracket was final yet, and when informed, they didn’t look thrilled, but continued the playful trash-talking.

“I hope they both shoot seven-under and someone loses in a nine-hole playoff,” said Foley, who also coaches Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Stephen Ames.

Last week the guys behind TourPlayers filmed a special feature of me covering the Northern Trust Open at Riviera — who knew I was such a comedian?? If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, I recommend fast forwarding to the 1:55 mark — as if I haven’t suffered enough embarrassment in the last few weeks! The word I’d use to describe myself isn’t very politically correct, so I’ll let you fill in the blank. Hey, if you can’t laugh at yourself…Enjoy!

Yani Tseng is enjoying her winning streak

The local media in Asia gave world’s No. 1 Yani Tseng a nickname. They’re calling her the “Queen of Golf,” Yani told me laughing during a phone interview last week. She’s not sure she’s deserving of such high praise, but she’s won four times in four starts in 2011, which vaulted her to No. 1 in the world after capturing the Australian Ladies Masters. On Sunday Yani continued her hot streak by dominating at the LPGA season-opener in Thailand. She shot a final round six-under 66 and blew away Michelle Wie by five shots.

Freddie Fever

The SI Golf Group had an especially lively PGA Tour Confidential (e-mail exchange) on Sunday evening, where anger management classes were even suggested by a colleague to another at one point! I’m joking, but there was some interesting back-and-forth between several participants. And then a few of us just got downright goofy. Fun times.

There’s nothing like Hall of Fame talk to get a bunch of golf writers fired up! The discussion was kicked off with whether we thought Freddie Couples’ place in the HOF was sealed. I think so. Even though he’s one of the biggest underachievers of his generation, I don’t think you can tell the history of golf without mentioning Couples and the impact he’s had on the game. Here are some excerpts from this week’s PGA Tour Confidential:
