The first round of this year’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic is drawing to a close and it’s a European who sits atop the leaderboard (well, that was the statistically probable outcome). Rory McIlroy took advantage of the hype surrounding the Westwood, Kaymer, Woods pairing to card a seven-under 65 and take a two-shot lead over an uncharacteristically upbeat Sergio Garcia.
Hype-laden it might well have been, but the showcase pairing didn’t disappoint, either. As the trio took to the eighteenth tee, Woods, at one-over par, found himself four adrift of Kaymer and five of Westwood. One stunning three-wood approach later, however, and a day of uninspiring mediocrity from the former World Number One found itself cast in an altogether more heroic light. Woods’ closing eagle, as set against a careless bogey from Westwood and a par from Kaymer, ensures that he enters tomorrow’s second round only two shots behind Europe’s finest.
