The Dust-Up in the Desert starts tomorrow!

Lee Westwood’s on-course success, tireless work in the interest of the European Tour and status as all-round good egg has been officially recognised by the European Tour, who’ve decided to grant him lifetime membership. The announcement comes in the midst of mounting anticipation of tomorrow’s first-round pairing of the World Number One with Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods.

A more muscular Tiger in happier times

Tiger’s been chatting with the media ahead of this week’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic. And before you ask: no, he wasn’t talking about the indefinite suspension of his billion-dollar development project… or his continuing sponsorship woe… or his preference for Tupac over Biggie.

In fact, if you were to suspect that his press conference went something like, ‘I’m close. The changes are coming together… blah, blah… it is what it is… blah, blah… so thankful… blah, blah… winning will take care of Number One.’, you wouldn’t be too far wrong.

While you’re all probably aware of the Elliot Saltman case, which is still ongoing, and my views on the issue, it’s worth returning to it for a few minutes, if only to watch Sky Sports News’ SPECIAL REPORT(!) on the subject: Rough Justice (see what they did there?).

See a rules infraction on the telecast? Call 1-800-THIS-POLICY-SUCKS

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem won’t bring an end to allowing fans phone in rules infractions they see on the telecast from their homes. The practice has already triggered controversy early in 2011 after Camilo Villegas and Padraig Harrington were both disqualified for signing incorrect scorecards after viewers notified tournament officials of the violations. Though Finchem still welcomes fan involvement in enforcing the rules, he’d like to see more common sense applied in enforcing the infractions called in by vigilant armchair officials, according to the AP.

The Wild Side of Golf

You’ve probably read it by now, but if you haven’t checked out the latest edition of PGA Tour Confidential, you can find it here. We held the e-mail chain earlier than usual because of the Super Bowl and because of the Monday finish, obviously we didn’t discuss the results. However, we chewed over the the rowdy crowds at the Phoenix Open and the antics on the 16th — should other events adopt the model? What do you guys think?
