The Greatest Show on Grass: Pro-Am Canceled Due to Frost
By Stephanie Wei under PGA Tour

Honestly, we’re in Scottsdale, Arizona?! Perhaps “The Greatest Show on Frost” would make a better tagline for the Phoenix tour stop right now. Now I know I’m not going to get any sympathy from the rest of the country, which is largely under snow and ice, but c’mon, we’re in the desert.

Tournament organizers delayed Wednesday’s Waste Management Open pro-am to noon and then eventually canceled it altogether.

Around 11am, practice facilities were shut down. The chilly temperatures turned the greens at TPC Scottsdale to icebergs. When the grounds crew made the rounds on Wednesday morning, they couldn’t cut holes. Even after it warmed up a bit at 1pm, the greens hadn’t defrosted due to the cold, windy conditions.

Many players went to practice at Whisper Rock instead.

When I walked outside this morning, it felt colder than it did on Long Island on Thanksgiving morning! And that was already really cold.

First-round play on Thursday is scheduled to kick off at 7:40am, but from the looks of the forecast, a delay is inevitable. According to one report, the temperature will be 26 degrees at 8am, but it’ll “feel like” 19 degrees. Um, bring your handwarmers?

Good news is the weather is supposed to steadily improve throughout the week, and by the weekend, high will return to 70 degrees.
