Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy is coping with an injury to his right index finger that may get in the way of a three-peat at the Tournament of Champions. He had twelve stitches in his finger after he fell on some coral while swimming on Tuesday. To prevent further injury, Ogilvy withdrew from the pro-am on Wednesday morning at Kapalua.
As for his current status, I’m told Ogilvy is having a doctor look at it as I type. No word on how his finger is feeling or if he’ll play tomorrow, but he will likely make a game-time decision. However, the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman tweeted:
When I asked a tournament official if this was accurate, I was told that no determination has been made.
Of course, it would be a huge disappointment if Ogilvy has to withdraw. He won this event at Kapalua the last two years and is trying to join Stuart Appleby and Gene Littler as the only players to have won the Tournament of Champions three times in a row.
Let’s hope Ogilvy’s finger is feeling better by Thursday morning.
