Defending champion Dustin Johnson and fan favorite Phil Mickelson headline the list of pros that have officially committed to play in the 2011 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, according to the Monterey Herald. Both Johnson and Mickelson have traditionally competed in this event, which is scheduled for February 10-13.
As we know, DJ has a strange love affair with Pebble Beach. It will be his first time back to the site of his epic meltdown in the final round of the US Open. (I think there should be a plaque to commemorate the spot by the second green, where he momentarily forgot he was right-handed and the rest is history.)
Pebble is one of three courses played for the event. Monterey Peninsula’s Shore Course and Spyglass complete the incredible rotation. I’ve been lucky enough to chop my around all three in the last six months and I don’t need to tell you that it doesn’t get much better than that. Name another place in the US where you can play three better courses within five minutes of each other. (Okay, Bandon Dunes, but that doesn’t count in my mind!) Oh, what I’d do to experience it all again…
Oh, of course the millionaire-dollar question is where Tiger will open his season. Good question. Since he treats his schedule like it’s more sensitive than national security, we can only harbor guesses. He historically opened his season at Torrey Pines — at least the last time he played a full season, which was in 2007. Who knows, maybe he’ll grace sponsors with an appearance at Pebble in 2011. And endure six-hour-plus rounds? On second thought…I’m more likely to be mistaken for Queen Elizabeth.
