In an effort to keep up with the times, the PGA Tour will likely allow fans to have cell phones next year, according to the Golf Channel’s Steve Sands. At the Wyndham Championship this August, the Tour tested out this proposed policy and the worst thing that happened was probably Anthony Kim’s friends taking pictures and video in the gallery (which was against the rules!).
There will be two more test events — first, the Chevron World Challenge, and then another at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. If all goes smoothly, then expect the Tour to permanently adopt the new regulation.
According to Sands, the Tour has been considering this new cell policy for several months and hopes that permitting fans to bring their cell phones at tournaments will increase attendance.
Just don’t forget to put your phone in the silent or vibrate mode!
