Remember when Fred Couples made the Champions Tour cool by winning three straight tournaments at the start of the year? Looked like he was going to win everything left on his schedule.
Well, Couples finally picked up his fourth win, 10 tournaments and a W/D after his third. And he did it in his usual, cool style, blowing past Corey Pavin with a back-nine 29 for a seven-shot victory at the Administaff Small Business Classic. (Yeah, Presidents Cup!) Couples shot a final-round 63, picking up two eagles — which used to be impressive until Rocco Mediate and Jonathan Byrd came along.
Couple has still had an unreal season — he has just three non-top 5s — but he busted out of his mini-slump or whatever you want to call it impressively. Couples trailed Pavin by two through 10 holes in the final round before going 7 under the rest of the way. It was an 11-shot swing in all, as Pavin slipped to fifth by the end of the tournament.
Couples made five birdies and an eagle in his final eight holes, and he needed just 24 putts for the round.
“I don’t know if I putted like that on the PGA Tour, ever,” said Couples. “I used to putt well and once you hit your mid-40s, every putt is important.”
