Anthony Kim’s Vegas Partying and Withdrawing Round-Up
By Stephanie Wei under PGA Tour

Sometimes I wish there were more Anthony Kims in golf.

But of course, I’m in the minority. You know, it’s not that I condone obnoxious behavior by young, wealthy and successful professional golfers — it’s just that at least he’s showing some personality and acting like your average 25-year-old and I can’t really berate someone having fun, but the problem is when it’s become (arguably) self-destructive.

As you may have heard, Anthony Kim was reportedly out hitting it hard on Monday night in Vegas, where he was for the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open. But he withdrew on Wednesday, citing the thumb injury that benched him for most the second-half of the season. Wait, so what happened? Here’s a summary of events:

*According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, AK’s antics were so belligerent that he was asked to tone it down by the Bellagio management:

“He is one loose cannon,” said a dealer, who said Kim may have set a personal record for F-bombs while playing high-stakes craps over the weekend.

Kim and poker superstar Phil Ivey were seated at the same table on Friday, ordering cognac and high-end whiskey.

[Ed note: “Loose cannon” — sound familiar?]

*Later into the wee hours of Monday night, a DJ named DJ Exodus was spinning over at the Mirage and tweeted this at 2:02am:

*AK officially withdrew from JT’s tourney on Wednesday, prompting speculation that partying played a role and lots of columns admonishing him.

*Chris DiMarco had a different message for AK, though:

“I’d like to thank Anthony Kim for either staying out too late or gambling too much — I don’t know what it was — I’m glad I got in,” said Chris DiMarco, who filled in the spot.

*Dave Haggith of IMG told Golf.com that the partying and withdrawal were “completely unrelated,” and something about AK’s thumb and the “recovery process.”

“The two are completely unrelated,” says Haggith, who also believes the media coverage of the incident at the Bellagio as been overblown. “He was being boisterous and he was asked to calm down and he was compliant.”

*NORM! of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports on AK’s final bar tab:

We hear the final tab for golfer Anthony Kim’s champagne-spraying spree at Jet nightclub (Mirage) on Monday came to about $80,000.

He went through about 120 bottles of champagne, including a six-liter bad boy of Dom Perignon that goes for $25,000.

An eyewitness said “most of it was sprayed.”

At one point during the champagne shower, Palms resident DJ Exodus tweeted, “Umbrella to the DJ booth please it’s raining Rosè…!!!”

I think that just about sums up this week’s drama in golf. Oh, and why does everyone care so much? Because this isn’t AK’s first time at the rodeo. Last year around this time, Robert Allenby accused AK of hitting it hard until 4am the night before AK smoked Allenby in the Presidents Cup singles match. Allenby also called AK the US team’s “loosest cannon” and the “current John Daly.”

Supposedly, AK’s had several come-to-Jesus moments since his crazy rookie days, but has he reformed? Uh, doubtful. And why should he? Well, he’s got a lot of golfing talent that would be a shame to waste. Drinking and gambling on the Monday of a Fall Series event is hardly living life on the edge.

Keep on partying, AK — as long as it doesn’t interfere with your golf game. (And take me next time!)
