Anthony Kim Speaks, Points Finger at Thumb
By Stephanie Wei under PGA Tour

Amidst all the rumors of Anthony Kim’s withdrawal from the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open following reports of late-night boozing and gambling on the Vegas strip, we hadn’t heard from AK himself…until now. In an interview with Sports Illustrated‘s Alan Shipnuck, Kim said the details of his partying have been “way, way exaggerated.” And more important, he stressed it was his still-injured, over-practiced thumb that led him to pull out of JT’s event, and not a two-day hangover.

“I’m not going to deny my friends and I went out and had a great time in Vegas,” Kim said to Shipnuck. “But that had absolutely nothing to do with me having to W/D. People may not want to believe that, but it’s true.”

Apparently, Kim had been practicing a bunch in Palm Springs the week before to prepare for the tournament. He’s annoyed that people aren’t talking about the hard work he’s put in on the golf course.

“I was in the gym every day at 5 a.m., then I’d head straight to the range, then I’d go play 36 holes, then I’d chip and putt,” Kim told Shipnuck. “Of course, nobody sees that.”

By last Saturday it was clear that Kim had overdone it, as his thumb had become sore and a little stiff. On Sunday, as he journeyed to Las Vegas, Kim consulted with two doctors who advised him not to hit any golf balls until Wednesday’s pro-am. Come Monday night, nearly two dozen of Kim’s friends had gathered in Las Vegas. He is a social creature who likes to be surrounded by buddies, at home and on the road. “Of course we went out on the town,” he says. “I wasn’t going to be able to practice on Tuesday.”

Got that? I’ve always been a fan of the motto, “Work hard, party hard.” I’m guessing AK is, too.
