By the time the first group had reached the first green, European captain Colin Montgomerie told ESPN that play wouldn’t have started had it been stroke play. It wasn’t until almost two hours later when Steve Stricker couldn’t find a place to drop because of the waterlogged fairway on No. 4 that officials suspended play. Now I know rain delays are annoying and sucks for the gallery, but unless you’ve ever played in such conditions (and in competition), you have no idea how miserable it is — so I think it was the right call, as no one should have to chop the ball around in that weather.
The delay also is an advantage to the Americans, who are losing three of the four matches. Much to just about everyone’s surprise, the rookie pair of Jeff Overton and Bubba Watson are 2-up through two on Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald. Impressive! Overton sank a huge putt from off the green on the first hole to post the first birdie on the American side. It’s early, but Overton/Watson could make Pavin look like a genius. Question is, f it comes down to the last match and the last hole for the US to take early lead, can they handle the pressure?
Where the other matches stand when play was suspended:
Match 1: Westwood/Kaymer 2-up over Mickelson/Johnson through 5.
Match 2: McIlroy/McDowell 1-up over Kuchar/Cink through 4.
Match 3: Poulter/Fisher 1-up over Woods/Stricker through 3.
Curiously enough, Phil Mickelson (as you can see in the picture above) is wearing two all-weather gloves this morning — something he’s never done and he’s trying it for the first time during a big event. Now I’d say that’s not advisable because it usualy takes a while to adjust for feel, especially around the greens, but mind you, this is Phil, who switched club manufacturers from Titleist to Callaway before the ’04 Ryder Cup. So, you know, this is actually less drastic. But Phil is even putting with two gloves! I have a pair, but I take them off when I putt. Then again, it’s been, like nine, years since I’ve played in such conditions — nor am I Phil Mickelson.
There’s also been a lot of chatter about the Americans’ rain gear. Apparently, several players have complained that the Sun Mountain suits are ill-fitting, heavy and not 100% waterproof. Notice that Tiger Woods wasn’t wearing a jacket despite the torrential downpour? As ’08 captain Paul Azinger noted, “What a disaster if it’s true these rain suits aren’t up to par. That’s just a tragic error.” So, they’re ugly and they don’t perform? That’s a double whammy! I believe the blame there goes to the Captainess, Lisa Pavin, since as we’re told, she dealt with all the uniforms. The rain suits are the most important detail considering they’re playing in Wales in October!
Last thought: I’m cheering extra hard for Tiger/Stricker to pound Poulter/Fisher. Imagine how unbearable Poulter will be if they win? His head might explode.
Alright, back to bed, folks. ESPN says there will be no weather updates until 7am EST. Someone call and wake me when play resumes. Thanks!
