There’s death, taxes and John Daly quitting withdrawing. Honestly. Just when you thought Daly couldn’t get anymore shameless, he manages to trump himself. It’s the same story every time and while I sympathize with injuries, this is just ridiculous. It’s a golf tournament, not a decathlon.
Just before 9 p.m. local time on Friday, news of John Daly blared over the loudspeakers in the media center at Whistling Straits. The official apologized for the late announcement, saying they had just been notified that Daly would not be returning to complete his second round.
My immediate instinct was to check out the leaderboard to see his hole-by-hole scores. This is what his scorecard through seven holes in the second round read: 4, 7, 4, 7, 4, 4, 3. His playing partners Padraig Harrington and Davis Love III opted not to play the seventh in the dark when play was suspended on Friday night.
And like clockwork, Daly breaks the sad news to his Twitter followers.
Daly, who has a lifelong exemption because he won the 1991 PGA Championship, also pulled out of last year’s event due to a back injury. Since 2005, he’s withdrawn from 18 PGA Tour events. Daly withdrew from two other events this season – the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and Valero Texas Open – again citing injuries.
Just another verse from an original John Daly country song.
